Limitation of Current Therapy

Limitations of current therapy

Today a number of effective treatment options are available for patients suffering from pain. However there are still challenges to be faced, particularly in patients who constantly suffer from severe pain. While opioids provide effective pain relief, they also have certain side effects, e.g. central nervous system disorders, like sleepiness, dizziness, and headache, and gastrointestinal effects, especially nausea, vomiting and constipation. These side effects can be very bothersome to the patient and may not be adequately managed by additional treatments. So it often happens that patients discontinue their therapy, and this in turn results in inadequate pain relief. In order to ensure the best possible quality of life for chronic pain patients, new analgesics are needed that not only provide broad and efficient pain relief but also have an improved side effect profile. Grünenthal’s Research and Development department is searching intensely for innovative analgesics which will help meet medical needs.
