Corporate Background
Grünenthal is a privately owned, research driven International Pharmaceutical Company with focus on pain management. It was founded shortly after the Second World War and was the first company in West Germany to receive a licence to manufacture penicillin on a large scale. For many years, Grünenthal antibiotic expertise was the most important factor in the company's growth.
The successful development of the centrally acting analgesic tramadol, during the 1960s and 1970s, prompted the company not only to embark on the task of developing drugs to combat pain, but also encouraged Grünenthal to market the drug on a world-wide basis. It was subsequently launched in the UK in 1994 under the trademark Zydol.
Today, Grünenthal has companies in 16 countries throughout the world, with particular emphasis on Europe and Latin America. The Group concentrates on developing and marketing drugs for moderate to severe pain. Grünenthal has a range of products on the market including a combination preparation for acute pain and a patch for chronic pain, with several further preparations in the pipe-line which should ensure that in the medium term, Grünenthal will become one of the leading specialists in pain therapy.
Grünenthal also operates in several other markets throughout the world, manufacturing and distributing products such as contraceptives (Germany and Latin America), respiratory tract medicines (Latin America), CNS preparations (Spain/Portugal) and dermatological preparations (Italy).
The group is headquartered by Grünenthal GmbH in Germany.
